One night, in the desert, little Bilby left her burrow for the first time.
She liked the moon very much. It was big and round and shiny and bright.
Each night when she left her burrow, she looked up to greet the moon.
And each night the moon smiled at her.
But one night the moon didn't smile. A piece of the moon was missing!
When she was searching the ground, she met a hopping mouse.
“Oh, Hopping Mouse,”said Little Bilby.
“Have you seen the moon tonight? A piece of it is missing!”
“Oh, no!”said Hopping Mouse. “If I find it, I will tell you.”
Each night, the moon was becoming smaller.
The moon was now just a thin silver crescent. Sand-dragon was sleeping.
“Oh, Dragon,”said Little Bilby. “Have you seen the moon tonight? Half of it is missing!”“Oh, dear!”said Dragon sleepily.“If I find it, I will tell you.”
Little Bilby asked Sticky Porkupine, Mole and Froglet, too.
But nobody knew about it. Then finally, there was no moon at all.
“Where was the moon?”Little Bilby felt sad.
But she didn't give up. She searched high and low. She looked everywhere.
“What are you looking for?”Boobook Owl said. “I am looking for the beautiful full moon,”said Little Bilby. “It has disappeared.”“Don't worry,”said Owl.
“Sometimes we can see it. Sometimes not. It'll come back soon.”
For the very next night a silver crescent appeared in the sky. And each night the moon became bigger and bigger. Little Bilby hurried off to tell Sand-dragon.
“Half the moon is back!”Then one night, the beautiful full moon came back.
“Moonlight makes my whiskers silver,”said Hopping Mouse. “It makes the rocks shine,”said Sticky Porkupine. “It changes the dew diamonds.”said Froglet. “I am glad the world has a moon,”said Little Bilby. And the moon smiled back to everyone.
